Choice of intravenous fluid therapy could improve survival in critically ill patients

According to the findings of a recent meta-analysis, the risk of critically ill patients dying in the hospital can be decreased by 4% when intravenous fluid therapy (IV) is administered using balanced solutions as opposed to the widely used saline.

The results of the BEST-Living Study were simultaneously published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine and presented today at the Critical Care Canada Forum (CCCF 2023) in Ottawa.

The study’s senior author, Prof. Simon Finfer AO, an intensive care physician, adjunct professor at UNSW Sydney, professorial fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, stated that the findings validated the critical role IV fluid selection plays in treating patients in critical illness.
