In the RG Kar rape and murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been asked to provide a supplemental charge sheet by the Joint Platform of physicians (WBJDF), a coalition of five physicians’ organizations. But on December 17, the WBJDF was denied permission by the Kolkata police to stage a demonstration at Doreena Crossing, which was supposed to last until December 26. In response, on December 18, the doctors’ body made the decision to petition the Calcutta High Court for permission to protest.
Citing worries about the potential for extreme traffic congestion, the police denied permission for the demonstration. They contended that because of possible crowding, hosting such an event during the hectic Christmas and New Year’s season would cause serious public discomfort. The police also cited previous instances in which the medics’ protests had caused traffic jams, making it challenging for the general public to commute. The police were concerned that permitting this demonstration might result in a disturbance of the peace.
The WBJDF has previously stated their intention to hold the protest in order to demand justice in the RG Kar case on December 15. Following the failure of the investigation into the rape and death of a young female medic from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the organisation has been pushing for the CBI to file a supplementary charge sheet. Before the case was turned over to the CBI, the local police first looked into the victim’s body, which was discovered semi-naked in the hospital’s lecture hall on August 9.
The victim’s mother was shocked and upset that the CBI had not submitted a charge sheet within the allotted time after months of inquiry. Consequently, on December 13, former Tala police station officer Abhijit Mondal and former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who had been detained in relation to the matter, were released on bail. This happened because, despite having control of the probe for ninety days, the CBI did not submit the supplemental charge sheet.
The victim’s mother has openly expressed her disappointment at the lack of advancement, stressing that she still doesn’t know the specifics of her daughter’s death, which has motivated her to continue seeking justice. The purpose of the WBJDF’s demonstration is to put pressure on the authorities to ensure responsibility in the case and speed up the inquiry.
