Dr. Ramanand Singh: Serving Bihar’s Poor for 35 Years with Compassionate Care

For over 35 years, Dr. Ramanand Singh, a dedicated physician from Barbigha village in Bihar, has been a symbol of selfless service in healthcare. In an era where reports of exorbitant medical fees and unethical practices have become common, Dr. Singh stands out for his unwavering commitment to affordable healthcare. Charging only Rs. 50 for consultations and often waiving fees for those unable to pay, he epitomizes the true spirit of medical service.

Dr. Singh’s journey began with a humble background in a village with limited access to healthcare. Witnessing the struggles of his community inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. After completing his MBBS from Ranchi Institute of Medical Sciences in 1986, Dr. Singh returned to his hometown, determined to make a difference. He set up a small clinic and began treating patients for just Rs. 5, a fraction of what other doctors charged at the time.

Over the years, Dr. Singh’s clinic became a lifeline for thousands of patients, not only from Barbigha but also from neighboring districts like Alava, Navada, and Patna. His reputation for compassionate care grew, and so did the number of people seeking his help. Despite the increasing patient load, Dr. Singh never compromised on his principles. He continued to keep his fees low and provided free treatment to those in need. In many cases, he even covered the cost of medicines and groceries for his patients.

Dr. Singh’s dedication extends beyond his clinic. He frequently organizes medical camps in remote areas, where healthcare is a luxury. These camps often reveal the harsh realities faced by rural populations, including the inability to afford basic medical care. Moved by these experiences, Dr. Singh began paying for his patients’ medications out of his own pocket, ensuring they could follow the prescribed treatments.

Operating his clinic on minimal fees presents financial challenges, especially with the rising costs of medical equipment and staff salaries. However, Dr. Singh manages to sustain his practice through income from his ancestral farm. His two sons, inspired by their father’s example, have also pursued careers in medicine, continuing the legacy of service.

Despite the obstacles, Dr. Singh remains committed to his mission. His satisfaction comes not from monetary gains but from the profound impact he has on his patients’ lives. He is a respected figure in his community, known for his integrity and dedication. In a profession increasingly marred by distrust, Dr. Singh’s work is a beacon of hope, reminding us of the noble purpose of medicine. Through his selfless service, he strives to restore faith in the medical profession and inspire future generations of doctors to prioritize compassion over profit.
