Following her family’s allegations of foul play, a murder investigation has been launched into the death of 21-year-old Anjana Thakur, a BSc nursing student at Aaroma College in Sundernagar, Mandi district. The incident, which was first reported as an unintentional fall from the hostel terrace, has since been reclassified as a murder. On November 10, seventeen days after her death, the Sundernagar police filed a complaint.
After allegedly falling from the terrace of her hostel, Anjana Thakur, a native of Guran village in Balichowki tehsil, Mandi, was discovered dead. But her father, Kishan Chand, accused his daughter of murder and filed a formal complaint with the Mandi Superintendent of Police. As suspicions about the circumstances of her death deepen, a formal complaint is filed under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The family and hundreds of locals protested in Mandi on November 8th, calling for a comprehensive investigation into Anjana’s killing. They urged a more thorough investigation in a memo they sent to the Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner. Concerned about inconsistencies in the college’s account of events, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) also demanded a judicial investigation into the issue in the days that followed.
Numerous facets of the case have sparked inquiries. The victim’s relatives brought up the fact that, after the incident, the hostel warden had called Anjana’s aunt rather than her close relatives using her locked phone. The family contends that this was out of the ordinary and raised questions about the circumstances of her passing. In addition, the father asserted that Anjana had mysterious head injuries and that her hospital bed seemed damp, which contradicted the college’s first allegation that she had fallen from the terrace.
Demands for justice and an open investigation have grown as a result of the family’s worries and the discrepancies in the college’s narrative. Women’s organizations and local citizens have stressed the importance of responsibility, particularly in light of the ambiguous circumstances surrounding Anjana’s passing. The victim’s injuries and the series of events leading up to her untimely death are currently the main areas of investigation for the authorities. Whether the situation was a terrible accident or a case of foul play will probably be determined by the results of the ongoing investigation.
