Fifteen second-year MBBS students were detained Monday in connection with the death of their junior, Anil Methaniya, who allegedly died from ragging, in a tragic occurrence at a medical college in Gujarat’s Patan district. After Methaniya allegedly died after a vicious ragging session on the evening of Saturday, October 14, 2023, the students, who were about 18 years old, were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among other charges.
Methaniya and other first-year students were severely tortured physically and psychologically by the accused seniors, according to the First Information Report (FIR) submitted by the college officials. The 15 second-year students allegedly summoned 11 first-year students, including Methaniya, into a dorm room for a “introduction” session on the night in question. The juniors had to stand for more than three hours while singing, dancing, and using derogatory language. During this time, they were not permitted to leave the room.
Methaniya reportedly collapsed from stress and tiredness due to the extreme physical and emotional hardship. During the trauma, his health gradually declined, and at midnight, he passed out. He was taken to a local hospital right away, where medical professionals pronounced him dead. The act has caused concern about the ongoing incidence of ragging in educational institutions and stunned the college community.
Under the direction of Dr. Hardik Shah, the college’s anti-ragging committee investigated and recorded statements from 26 students, including 15 second-year students and 11 first-year students. The committee verified that the second-year students, including the 15 accused who have since been taken into custody, were responsible for the ragging incident. The students are accused of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, unlawful assembly, wrongful imprisonment, and using profanity, among other offences, in the formal complaint submitted to the Balisana police station.
Following the event, the accused students were placed on academic and hostel suspension pending further directives. To guarantee the victim receives justice, authorities have pledged a comprehensive inquiry. Notwithstanding numerous anti-ragging legislation and committees designed to stop such acts, Methaniya’s terrible death has once again raised awareness of the problem of ragging in Indian educational institutions.
This episode serves as a reminder of the perils of ragging, which has resulted in other catastrophes throughout the nation. It serves as a sobering reminder of how crucial it is to implement stringent anti-ragging policies in schools and universities in order to stop such violence and guarantee the security and welfare of students.
