Due to the lack of a wheelchair at the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD), a woman in her mid-40s was compelled to carry her injured spouse on her back in a traumatic occurrence at Raiganj Government Medical College & Hospital (RGMCH) in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal. Following its dissemination on social media, the Monday incident provoked intense condemnation.
When her 51-year-old husband, Paritosh Barman, hurt his leg while overseeing construction work at home, Raipur village homemaker Salita Barman took him to the hospital. Paritosh required assistance to get to the OPD because he was unable to walk due to his injuries. Salita stated that she had no way to get around because there was no wheelchair available and the private security guards at the hospital gate demanded that an e-rickshaw driver leave right away.
Despite the difficulty, Salita carried her husband to the OPD after asking whether she may carry him on her back. Their problems didn’t stop there; because there were still no wheelchairs available, Salita had to carry her husband once more when physicians recommended a CT scan, which necessitated them to move to a different facility.
While acknowledging his wife’s support, Paritosh chastised the hospital’s infrastructure for lacking the required medical supplies. He called the scenario regrettable, pointing out that there were no wheelchairs available, thus Salita had to bear the physical burden of carrying him.
The event was denounced by Raiganj MLA Krishna Kalyani, who called it “inhuman” that a wife was forced to carry her husband in this way for medical treatment. In addition to criticizing the hospital’s medical superintendent, Priyankar Roy, for failing to make appropriate preparations for patients like Paritosh, Kalyani faulted the hospital administration for the dearth of suitable amenities.
In defense of the hospital, Priyankar Roy asserted that stretchers and wheelchairs were available and that the patient would have gotten one if they had waited. Roy added that when the story went viral on social media, Paritosh was eventually given a wheelchair.
The tragedy sparked public outrage and calls for changes to the healthcare system to stop similar incidents from happening again, raising severe worries about the hospital’s infrastructure and patient care.
