Transforming Healthcare: Sakra World Hospital’s Bold Expansion Journey in Bengaluru

Renowned multispecialty hospital Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru is about to embark on a major development adventure with support from Japanese promoters Secom and Toyota Tsusho. This development represents a significant commitment to improving healthcare services and infrastructure in the region, with an investment of up to ₹2,000 crore over the next five years.

The decision to grow came about because Sakra’s current hospital was filling up quickly and more space was needed to accommodate the increasing demand for high-quality medical care. In a recent interview with ET, Sakra World Hospital’s executive director, Yuichi Nagano, underlined the necessity for expansion, citing the hospital’s achievements and the necessity of efficiently serving a larger patient base.

As part of its growth plans, Sakra intends to build three new hospitals in Bengaluru, comprising a boutique hospital and two multispecialty hospitals, adding a total of 1,000 new hospital beds. At Banaswadi, Bengaluru North, a 500-bed greenfield multispecialty hospital is to be built in the first phase at an estimated cost of 1,000 crore. This 600,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art complex is expected to be finished by the end of 2026, with operations starting in early 2027. It will meet the region’s pressing healthcare requirements by providing specialized services, such as cutting-edge cancer treatment facilities.

Furthermore, Sakra is building a 50-bed boutique hospital at Bengaluru’s HSR Layout, with plans to open for business this year. This boutique hospital will serve a specific patient population looking for top-notch medical experiences by offering individualized care and specialized services.

In the future, Sakra hopes to open a third, larger hospital in Bengaluru with 300–400 beds in five years, therefore increasing its capacity and reach to effectively serve the community. Although Sakra has not yet decided on a location for this future hospital, they are still fully committed to improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare.

Two wealthy investors who are dedicated to financing Sakra’s growth trajectory are Secom and Toyota Tsusho, who back the expansion initiative. Toyota Tsusho owns the remaining shares in the joint venture (JV) that runs Sakra World Hospital, with Secom Medical System, a group subsidiary of Secom, controlling 60% of the business. This cooperative endeavor highlights the strategic alliance between Japanese and Indian healthcare stakeholders, utilizing knowledge and assets to propel healthcare breakthroughs.

Sakra World Hospital has accomplished a number of noteworthy firsts since opening as the first Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Indian hospital industry in 2014. Sakra, which focuses on patient-centric care and expects to generate ₹500 crore in income from its current operations in 2023, has established itself as a premier healthcare

Nagano emphasized the strategic focus on the Bengaluru market by pointing to the city’s changing medical service landscape and growth prospects. He underlined that despite India’s expanding middle class and economic progress, the nation lacks access to top-notch medical facilities. The goal of Sakra’s expansion is to close this gap by providing cutting-edge healthcare solutions and improving patient experiences.

The incorporation of the Japanese business philosophy Kaizen, which emphasizes ongoing improvements in patient safety and operational effectiveness, is a key component of Sakra’s methodology. This way of thinking demonstrates Sakra’s dedication to quality and promotes continuous improvements in the standards of healthcare delivery.

In order to improve total patient satisfaction, Sakra is also incorporating Japanese hospitality, design, and aesthetics into its hospitals. Sakra seeks to establish a holistic therapeutic environment that puts the comfort and well-being of its patients first by fusing aspects of Japanese culture and service ethics.

To conclude, the ambitious development plans of Sakra World Hospital represent a noteworthy advancement in Bengaluru’s healthcare services and infrastructure. Sakra is positioned to leave a lasting impression on the healthcare scene and establish new standards for excellence in the sector thanks to its strong dedication to quality, innovation, and patient-centered care.
