Three people were taken into custody by the Cantonment Police on Wednesday in relation to an assault on Dr. M. Karthikeyan, a 45-year-old orthopaedic expert at the city’s ESI Hospital. The doctor was beaten inside the hospital grounds on Tuesday, the day before, following a fight over a traffic violation.
The incident reportedly started when Dr. Karthikeyan, who had just returned to the hospital, got into a verbal fight with someone close to the facility’s entrance. Although the details of the debate have not been completely revealed, it appears that the disagreement had something to do with traffic. When a bunch of individuals joined the individual in dispute, the situation rapidly worsened as tensions rose. Inside the hospital, they went on to physically attack Dr. Karthikeyan.
Dr. Karthikeyan was seriously injured in what was described as a brutal attack. A ripped ear and multiple additional wounds were among the injuries. The doctor was sent to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital for medical care later that day due to the intensity of the assault. The severity of the injuries, especially the ripped ear, points to a vicious assault, and the case has received a lot of attention because it involves an assault on a medical practitioner who was performing their job.
The Cantonment Police opened an investigation into the event after it happened. They were able to apprehend three males in relation to the assault based on the evidence and witness accounts. Although the identities of those who were detained have not yet been made public, authorities are still working to look into the matter and ascertain the accused’s entire level of involvement.
Concerns over the safety of healthcare workers in the nation have been raised by the incident, which has angered and alarmed both the public and medical professionals. Attacks against physicians, especially in hospital settings, have been a growing issue, with medical personnel being subjected to violence, insults, and threats while carrying out their jobs. Given that healthcare workers are supposed to deliver care in a secure setting, this incident emphasizes the need for improved security measures.
Police have pledged to take tough measures against individuals responsible for the assault and are still looking into the event. As the matter develops, further court sessions are anticipated.
