At least six persons, including a toddler, three men, and two women, tragically lost their lives in a terrible fire that started at a private hospital on Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul-Trichy Road on Thursday night. According to reports, the victims suffocated to death after being discovered asleep in a lift. They were unable to survive despite rescue efforts due to the fire and the smoke that resulted from it. They were sent to a local hospital, but when the physicians got there, they pronounced them dead.
Fire and rescue crews were evacuating about thirty hospital in-patients when the event happened. According to a preliminary police investigation, the hospital fire may have started as a result of an electrical short circuit. Thick smoke filled the building as the fire grew, and firefighters were sent in right once to put out the flames. The severity of the crisis was demonstrated by the massive smoke plumes that rose from the hospital in the video footage taken at the scene.
After receiving the distress call, the fire department moved quickly, sending over four fire engines to the location. Evacuating patients from the impacted areas—especially those trapped in the elevator—was the first priority. Patients were taken to various hospitals, including the Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital, where the evacuated people were admitted, using more than 10 ambulances. The loss of life from suffocation was a devastating conclusion, but fortunately, those who had been rescued from the elevator and other areas of the hospital did not have life-threatening injuries.
Palani MLA IB Senthilkumar and District Collector MN Poongodi went to the scene to supervise the rescue efforts and evaluate the damage. They received an update on the current state of affairs and the steps being taken to protect the remaining patients. In order to ascertain whether there was any carelessness or a breach in safety procedures at the hospital, the authorities have promised a comprehensive inquiry into the cause of the incident.
Hospital safety and emergency readiness, especially in the case of fires or other calamities, have come under scrutiny as a result of the tragedy. Authorities will probably concentrate on whether safety precautions like fire escapes, alarms, and frequent safety exercises were sufficient to avert such a disastrous disaster as the probe goes on.
