Record-Breaking 8.5 kg Spleen Removed in Landmark Surgery at Wockhardt Hospitals

In a truly amazing medical feat, Rajkumar Tiwari, 37, had his 8.5 kg spleen successfully removed by medical professionals at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mira Road, Thane. With this historic procedure, Tiwari’s 17-year agony comes to an end, and also breaks the previous world record for the largest spleen removed.
Since he was eighteen years old, Rajkumar Tiwari had been afflicted with hypersplenism and huge splenomegaly, an uncommon and serious illness. His spleen enlarged greatly as a result of this disease, which had serious health consequences. His symptoms, which severely limited his capacity to do daily activities, were intense abdominal tightness, pain, exhaustion, and restricted movement. Despite multiple medical procedures over the years, his condition continued to deteriorate.

Under the direction of consultant surgeon Dr. Imran Shaikh, the medical team performed a painstaking six-hour procedure. The removed spleen weighed 8.5 kg and measured 90 cm, or roughly three feet by 1.5 feet. This is much bigger than the spleen that held the previous Guinness World Record, which was 2.3 kg and measured 73.66 cm. A noteworthy accomplishment, given the possible dangers and problems, was the successful completion of this intricate procedure.
Dr. Shaikh described the difficulties encountered during the procedure. Hypersplenism combined with massive splenomegaly is an uncommon and dangerous condition. In these situations, the overactive spleen causes blood cells to break down too soon, which causes severe anemia, a dangerously low platelet count, and a low white blood cell count. Due of these factors, Tiwari was extremely vulnerable.

Tiwari’s left upper abdominal pain first manifested 17 years ago, marking the beginning of his health issues. His spleen kept growing, making his condition worse, and he received several treatments but received no relief. Because of the spleen’s size, his belly was severely obstructed, which resulted in vomiting and other associated problems. Tiwari was pale, severely weak, and unable to walk or climb stairs when he arrived at Wockhardt Hospitals.
His condition was verified to be severe by a thorough diagnosis when he arrived at the hospital. His spleen was found to be massively enlarged after a battery of tests and CT scans by the medical team, headed by Dr. Shaikh. Situated on the left side of the abdomen, the spleen is an essential organ for blood filtering since it eliminates outdated or damaged red blood cells. However, in Tiwari’s case, the spleen’s over-enlargement had severely compromised his overall health.

The medical team used a method to cut off the spleen’s major blood supply in order to reduce these hazards. They significantly reduced the possibility that transfused blood products would be ruined by inserting coils into the artery, which raised the surgical margin of safety. Tiwari was admitted to the operating room the next day after these safety measures were implemented.

The director of Wockhardt Hospitals on Mira Road, Dr. Pankaj Dhamija, expressed his happiness with the result. He said that Tiwari’s successful operation and subsequent recuperation demonstrated the hospital’s dedication to offering top-notch medical treatment and handling challenging medical situations.
Tiwari saw the surgery as the conclusion of a grueling and protracted journey. He conveyed his sincere appreciation to Dr. Shaikh and the medical staff at Wockhardt Hospitals for reviving him. “I have lost a great deal of weight after fighting for 17 years. Thanks to Dr. Shaikh and his staff, the ongoing pain and discomfort that kept me from living a normal life is finally gone,” exclaimed a relieved Tiwari.

In addition to breaking previous records, this historic surgery demonstrated the progress made in medicine and the commitment of medical personnel to treating uncommon and difficult medical diseases. The fact that Tiwari’s operation was successful is both an inspiration and a tribute to the ability of contemporary medicine to relieve suffering and enhance quality of life for individuals with difficult medical conditions.
