Patient Shot Dead Inside GTB Hospital: Medical Staff Strike Over Safety Concerns

An unidentified assailant shot and killed 32-year-old Riyazuddin inside GTB Hospital’s Ward Number 24 in New Delhi on Sunday. A lone shooter targeted Riyazuddin, who was admitted on June 23 to treat a stomach ailment. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary confirmed that a PCR call regarding the shooting was received at the GTB Enclave police station, indicating that the incident provoked a rapid police reaction. When police arrived, they discovered Riyazuddin in severe condition; medical professionals eventually pronounced him dead.]

The police claim that at approximately 4 p.m., an 18-year-old guy entered the ward and shot Riyazuddin, who later passed away from his wounds. According to DCP Choudhary, the shooting seemed to be motivated by animosity towards the individual. To find the offender, the police have assembled teams and filed a case.
The Residents’ Doctors Association (RDA) at GTB Hospital declared an indefinite strike in response to the terrible incident, citing serious safety concerns. The statement released by the RDA brought to light persistent problems with insufficient security measures on the hospital grounds. The group stressed that the terrible incident highlighted a serious failure in providing a safe environment for patients and healthcare providers, and it condemned the Delhi Government for failing to respond to repeated requests for more security.

In response to the event, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj pledged to conduct a thorough security assessment of all the city’s hospitals. He gave his word that carelessness would not be accepted. Before the gunman turned his gun on Riyazuddin, a few people had pushed the attending physician aside, according to a hospital official who was describing the events. Thankfully, nobody else was hurt in the incident. Officers from the GTB Enclave police station, comprising the Crime Branch officers, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and Station House Officer (SHO), came at the site after the incident.

The youngster entered the ward shortly before 4 pm, and the on-duty nurse, who wished to remain nameless, described the terrifying minutes, pleading with everyone to be calm and not sound the alarm. He then pulled out a concealed handgun, shot Riyazuddin, and ran away. One of the spectators alerted the police as soon as the gunshot was heard, drawing a gathering outside the ward. For everyone in the ward, the scenario was horrifying, according to the nurse.

The RDA reaffirmed their determination to strike until significant improvements in safety measures were put in place and voiced their profound worry over the security failings that contributed to the unfortunate occurrence in their official statement. They emphasized the pressing necessity of taking steps to stop future incidents and guarantee the of both patients and healthcare staff.
