NMC Mandates ABHA ID for Patient Registration in Medical College Hospitals

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated that all medical colleges across India ensure that patients admitted to hospitals affiliated with them possess Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID cards. In a notice issued on Tuesday, the NMC emphasized that ABHA IDs are now a prerequisite for the registration of patients visiting outpatient departments (OPD), inpatient departments (IPD), and emergency services in these hospitals. This requirement is part of a broader initiative to enhance patient authentication and streamline healthcare services across the nation.

The NMC directive specifies that all patients, whether visiting for outpatient or inpatient services, must undergo registration with an ABHA ID in addition to the hospital’s own registration number. This dual registration process aims to integrate patients more comprehensively into the national health system, allowing for better tracking of healthcare services and outcomes.

The ABHA ID is a unique health identifier created under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which aims to develop the backbone necessary to support the integrated digital health infrastructure of the country. It will bridge the existing gap amongst different stakeholders of healthcare ecosystems through digital highways. With this system, patients’ health records are more easily accessible and transferable between healthcare providers, enhancing the continuity and quality of care.

Moreover, the NMC highlighted the significance of authenticating patients and other clinical materials within hospitals. This authentication process is set to play a crucial role in several critical decisions, including the potential increase of undergraduate or postgraduate seats in medical colleges.
