Nationwide Protests Erupt Following Brutal Murder of Female Doctor at Kolkata Hospital

A lady post-graduate trainee doctor was found brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, in a horrifying occurrence. In India, a wave of demonstrations and demands for justice have been triggered by this unfortunate incident. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has demanded swift action and support for the victim in the wake of the event, calling for a statewide shutdown of outpatient departments (OPDs) beginning on Tuesday.

Doctors and medical students congregated at AIIMS Delhi to voice their indignation and concerns. The president of AIIMS’s Resident Doctors Association (RDA), Dr. Indra Shekhar Prasad, expressed the gravity of the matter and emphasized how these horrible acts jeopardize the security and working circumstances of female physicians. Dr. Prasad cited a lack of safety guarantees for medical personnel, especially women, and demanded for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the occurrence. He declared that the demonstrations would continue until a written guarantee was obtained on the Central Protection Act’s application to protect physicians.

At Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, similar protests were documented, with medical personnel supporting the demands for a CBI probe and improved safety protocols. Beyond Delhi, medical experts in Mumbai and Nagpur have also joined the nationwide movement of protest. BMC MARD General Secretary Dr. Akshay Dongardive emphasized the savagery of the crime, drawing comparisons to the Nirbhaya case and expressing regret for what had happened. Emergency services continue to operate in spite of the protests, guaranteeing that patient care is not interfered with.

In a proactive move, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote to Union Minister JP Nadda to request a thorough investigation into the conditions that led to this kind of crime. The IMA is pushing for better working conditions and increased safety measures for physicians, stressing that these kinds of mishaps are intolerable and demand immediate attention.

This terrible incident highlights the necessity for strict safety regulations and increased security for medical personnel, especially women who operate in hazardous conditions. The continuous demonstrations and calls for justice are a reflection of the general anxiety about workplace safety and the pressing need for structural adjustments to stop such horrible acts from happening in the future.
