During the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) fourth anniversary ceremony on September 24, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda commended the NMC for its advancements in public health and medical education in India. Among the noteworthy projects he mentioned in his address was the National Medical Register (NMR), an interactive and extensive database that contains information on every MBBS physician now in practice in India.
The NMR portal, which went live on August 23, is a big step in expediting physician registration nationwide. The incorporation of doctors’ Aadhaar IDs into the portal, which has already received almost 20,000 applications, is one of its primary features and guarantees the legitimacy of every person mentioned. By offering a reliable list of all licensed physicians, this linkage enhances the medical professionals database’s legitimacy and correctness. It is anticipated that this effort will streamline the process of obtaining trustworthy information about physicians and enhance workforce management.
Nadda also praised the NMC for its outstanding success in building out the infrastructure for medical education. The commission has increased the number of undergraduate and graduate seats in medical colleges across the nation by 25,000 during the last four years. One year ahead of schedule, the ambitious goal of one lakh MBBS seats is being attained as part of this endeavor. The increase of medical seats is vital to fulfill the increasing demand for medical professionals in India, ensuring more opportunity for ambitious doctors and addressing the country’s healthcare needs.
Nadda asked the NMC to accomplish another objective, which is to add 75,000 more medical seats over the next five years, which was set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In addition to increasing access to medical education, this would also prepare a larger workforce to meet the country’s healthcare demands.
Nadda valued the NMC’s acceptance of technology improvements in medical education in addition to the extension of seats. notably the implementation of biometric attendance systems for faculty personnel that are enabled by Aadhaar and the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) for evaluating medical colleges. Nadda concluded by applauding the Family Adoption Programme, which trains MBBS students to become more compassionate and capable medical professionals.
