All MBBS physicians who are qualified to practice in India can now register on a recently opened portal, according to the National Medical Commission (NMC), which is building a single database called the National Medical Register (NMR). With the use of Aadhaar IDs to verify their identities, this dynamic database will act as a single repository for all registered medical practitioners. Better accuracy and openness in recording the information of the nation’s over 13 lakh doctors are the goals of the NMR.
The NMR is currently prepared for the instant registration of all registered medical practitioners (RMPs), according to Dr. B Srinivas, Secretary of the NMC. It is necessary for all MBBS physicians who are currently listed on the Indian Medical Register (IMR) to re-register on the NMR. In order to provide a streamlined and integrated verification procedure, this process is connected with medical colleges, institutes, and State Medical Councils (SMCs).
The registration procedure is simple. A digital copy of their MBBS degree certificate, their Aadhaar IDs, and their registration certificates from the State Medical Council or Medical Council of India—where they were first registered—are required for doctors. It is possible to manually enter and submit additional information through the site, such as registration and certification credentials.
The application is sent to the relevant SMC for verification when it is submitted. After that, the SMC forwards the application to the appropriate medical facility for additional assessment. Following a successful verification process, the application is forwarded to the NMC, where the physician receives a special NMR ID. Physicians have the option to become members of the Healthcare Provider Registry throughout this procedure, which would connect them to India’s larger digital healthcare ecosystem.
Among the services available on the NMR portal are the options to add more credentials, monitor applications, revoke licenses, and issue digital doctor certificates and NMR ID cards. At present, the portal solely permits registration for MBBS degrees; however, the NMC intends to permit the incorporation of more qualifications in the future.
Comprehensive information on the entire number of doctors in India, including those who have died, left the nation, or lost their medical license, would be made available by the NMR. It is anticipated that this new system will greatly improve India’s digital healthcare ecosystem by supplying more precise data and enabling higher-quality healthcare services. J.P. Nadda, the Union Health Minister, launched the NMR on August 23. It is a vital step in raising the standard of healthcare in India.
