After a remarkable medical journey, a team lead by pediatric surgeon Dr. Bhavesh Doshi and neonatologist Dr. Nitu Mundhra successfully treated a one-year-old infant with an uncommon congenital abnormality called Ano Rectal abnormality (ARM). The absence of an anal orifice was the defining feature of this disorder, which provided difficult hurdles needing five procedures and meticulous management.
The narrative opens with Mr. and Mrs. Salian of Mira Road, whose happiness at having welcomed their first child was short-lived when they discovered the kid’s illness. Anorectal malformation required emergency medical intervention, as did hypopadias and tongue knot. After the baby was brought to Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, a group of specialists under the direction of Dr. Mundhra began providing comprehensive care.
Dr. Mundhra stressed how uncommon ARM is and how prenatal ultrasound tests frequently miss it. It is essential to carefully examine babies in order to detect these abnormalities as soon as possible. A comprehensive treatment plan was necessary due to the baby’s numerous problems, which included tongue tie, hypopadias, and anal deformity.
Dr. Doshi described the surgical procedure and the three-step process for treating ARM. Stool transit was made transient by the first colostomy. Later procedures involved colostomy closure and Posterior Sagittal Ano Rectoplasty (PSARP) to create a new anus. In order to reestablish normal urine function, corrective surgery for hypospadias was also carried out.
The medical staff encountered significant obstacles. Because of their delicate anatomy, newborns require precision and competence when undergoing surgical procedures. To provide complete care and track the baby’s development, the pediatric surgery and neonatology departments have to work together well.
If the baby hadn’t received treatment right away, there could have been delays in development and failure to thrive.
