Significantly, Vishnuswaroop Shahi, the primary suspect in the murder and robbery case of Dr. Yogesh Chander Paul, age 63, has been taken into custody by the Delhi Police. Dr. Paul, a prominent physician in Jangpura Extension, South-East Delhi, was brutally killed in his own house five months ago in May 2024. Shahi allegedly grabbed items and ran away after killing the doctor, which led to a manhunt that lasted for months.
Shahi, 38, was named as the case’s principal defendant. A reward of ₹50,000 had been offered by the police for any information that would result in his arrest. According to the inquiry, Shahi had been deliberately avoiding the police by switching up his cell phone frequently and using several SIM cards—at least 20 in total—to hide his identity. Because of these strategies, it was very challenging for the authorities to follow his whereabouts or communications.
The police’s successful pursuit of Shahi on a bus bound for Banbasa, a town in Uttarakhand close to the India-Nepal border, marked a turning point in the investigation. The police used this information to stop the bus and apprehend Shahi, who was trying to escape to Nepal.
Shahi was characterized by the police as a smart and crafty person who had taken extreme measures to evade arrest. His usage of several SIM cards and fictitious names suggested a deliberate attempt to evade detection by law authorities. Additionally, authorities stated that Shahi had been evading capture for months by hiding in several places.
Yogesh Chander, Dr. Paul was a well-respected doctor who had been treating patients in the area for many years, therefore his murder had stunned the community. Although the terrible loss still exists, Shahi’s arrest provides some closure to his family and friends, who had been crushed by the heinous crime.
Police are currently looking into whether Shahi committed the crime alone or with any collaborators after his detention. As a key component of the ongoing investigation, they are also looking into his past to determine why he committed the crime.
