Kerala Doctor’s Lymphedema Treatment Garners Global Acclaim in Medical Journal

Dr. S R Narahari, a physician from Kerala, creates history when his innovative integrative medicine for lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema is published in the British Journal of Dermatology. Under the guidance of Professor Terence J. Ryan at the Institute of Applied Dermatology, a global breakthrough in dermatology was achieved with the development of a protocol that integrates modern and traditional medicine.

An original article titled “Integrative medicine and self-care in the treatment of lymphatic filariasis-associated lymphoedema: an effective strategy!” has been published in the British Journal of Dermatology (BJD). This article describes the novel strategy that Dr. S R Narahari created to treat lymphoedema linked to lymphatic filariasis by fusing integrative medicine with self-care.

Prof. Archana Singal, Chief Editor of the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (IJDVL), has also published an editorial commenting on this paper. Regarding the relevance and effects of Dr. Narahari’s integrative medicine in the context of dermatology and medical research, the editorial most likely offers insights, analysis, or commentary.

Through extensive research and clinical work, senior allopathic dermatologist Dr. Narahari has developed an integrative medicine approach that combines ayurveda, yoga, and allopathy. Using an integrative approach, he successfully treated thousands of patients with lymphedema and lymphatic filariasis at the not-for-profit Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) in Kasargod in 1999.

Since this integrative medicine is featured on the cover of the British Journal of Dermatology (BJD), Dr. Narahari is grateful for the significant recognition of their work. He emphasizes how important this recognition is, given that BJD is the most reputable dermatology journal in the world. This is the first time that the cover page of BJD has highlighted an integrative medicine strategy that combines conventional Indian medical knowledge with contemporary medicine.

The Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD) has successfully treated more than 6000 patients from all over the world who have lymphatic filariasis and lymphedema over the past 24 years. At present, the IAD is working with the Ministry of Ayush, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), and the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to run a free treatment program for patients in those states.

Thousands of patients have smiled as a result of Dr. Narahari’s integrative treatment without surgery, and she is proud of this accomplishment. Enhancing the quality of life for individuals impacted by this underappreciated tropical illness is the main goal of the mission.
