The Karnataka sex determination and abortion scam, which the CID unearthed, exposes a convoluted web of illicit activities involving a number of parties, including hospitals, touts, physicians, and distributors of ultrasound machines. The probe clarifies the racket’s operating methodology, the significance of key players, and the scope of illicit operations over a number of years.
The scam comprises the unlawful identification of fetal sex followed by abortions, mostly targeting female fetuses. It was uncovered by the Baiyappanahalli police of Bengaluru during a routine interception of a suspicious car. The individuals suspected of being involved in this scam were active in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Channarayapatna, and Mandya.
Dr. Mallikarjuna Swamy, an Ayurvedic physician who obtained ultrasound scanners without the required paperwork, and a few other touts who assisted expectant parents with sex determination tests and abortions are major participants in this illicit activity. Along with their associates and the medical staff, Drs. Chandan Ballal and Tulasiram were instrumental in carrying out the illegal abortions and overseeing the logistics of the operation.
The CID’s investigation revealed that sex determination tests were being performed in improvised labs in areas close to Mandya, with the results being submitted to Mysuru hospitals for abortions. The procedure required parents to spend a large sum of money for both the sex determination tests and any future abortions, making it a highly expensive transaction.
In order to emphasize the extent of the illicit activities and the involvement of numerous establishments in their facilitation, the CID also confiscated multiple ultrasound machines from different locations. The scope of the racket’s activities was also made clear by the inquiry, which estimated that hundreds of illegal abortions were carried out over a number of years.
The investigation is further complicated by the involvement of people like Matha Hospital receptionist Rizma Khanum, who solicits abortions from clients and works with the touts. The CID’s efforts to obtain evidence, such as the use of authorized ultrasonography dealers as witnesses, show the breadth of their investigation and their commitment to holding those guilty accountable.
All things considered, the Karnataka sex determination and abortion racket constitutes a grave transgression of law and medical ethics, with far-reaching consequences for healthcare practices and reproductive rights in the area. Maintaining the integrity of medical services and defending the rights of those seeking healthcare services depends on the CID’s efforts to identify and stop these illicit activities.
