India’s health policies are formulated by the central legislative body, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). These regulations are carried out by a number of governmental agencies. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has replaced the Medical Council of India as the highest authority in India for regulating the quality and provision of medical services and education. The NMC was established by the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 (the NMC Act). The Indian Nursing Council, Dental Council of India, Pharmacy Council of India, Central Council for Indian Medicine, and Allied Health Professionals Council are additional regulatory bodies. In India, state-level councils oversee the regulation of medical practitioners.
