In a recent address to the Lok Sabha, Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted substantial advancements in India’s healthcare infrastructure achieved under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. These developments reflect the government’s commitment to improving medical education, expanding healthcare access, and enhancing overall public health.
Nadda reported a dramatic increase in the number of medical colleges in India, which has surged from 387 in 2014 to 731 in 2024. This expansion signifies a robust effort to enhance medical education and training, addressing the growing need for healthcare professionals across the country. The increase in medical colleges is accompanied by a substantial rise in the number of undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats. Undergraduate seats have more than doubled, increasing from 51,348 to 1.12 lakh, marking a 118% rise. Postgraduate seats have also grown significantly by 133%, reflecting a commitment to developing a well-rounded medical workforce capable of meeting the country’s healthcare needs.
Nadda emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government has prioritized health as a central focus. He noted that the health budget has seen a remarkable increase of 164%—from Rs 33,278 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 90,958 crore. This increase underscores the government’s dedication to investing in healthcare infrastructure and services.
The Health Minister also highlighted the expansion of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Prior to the NDA government’s tenure, there was only one AIIMS in the country. During the tenure of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, six new AIIMS were established. In the past decade under the Modi government, 22 new AIIMS have been approved, with 18 already operational and four still under construction. This expansion aims to provide high-quality medical education and healthcare services across different regions of India.
Another significant achievement cited was the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, which has provided free treatment facilities to approximately 12 crore families, covering more than 55 crore people. The scheme offers up to Rs 5 lakh in free treatment and has established 1.73 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. This initiative has been instrumental in reducing out-of-pocket health expenses from 62% to 47.1%, making healthcare more affordable and accessible to millions of Indians.
Overall, Nadda’s address showcased the NDA government’s strides in strengthening India’s health infrastructure, expanding medical education, and improving public health accessibility, reflecting a comprehensive approach to advancing the nation’s healthcare system.
