India’s First Intra-Operative Electron Radiation Therapy Launched at Aster DM Healthcare

Intra-Operative Electron Radiation Therapy, or IOeRT, is now available at Aster DM Healthcare’s Whitefield, Bengaluru-based Aster International Institute of Oncology (AIIO). This represents a significant development in precision cancer care since the cutting-edge cancer treatment technology is now accessible for the first time in India.

During surgery, IOeRT is a novel radiotherapy technique that applies focused radiation directly to the tumor location. By focusing on any cancer cells that remain after the tumor is removed, this approach minimizes the need for post-surgery radiation treatments. By accurately concentrating radiation on the impacted region, IOeRT shields neighboring healthy tissue, reducing needless exposure and adverse effects. Consequently, it reduces the total treatment duration and shortens recuperation durations in addition to increasing treatment accuracy.

Aster DM Healthcare’s Deputy Managing Director, Alisha Moopen, expressed excitement over this development and referred to it as a major turning point for cancer care in India. She underlined how IOeRT offers more focused, efficient, and minimally invasive therapy choices in oncology, bringing oncology to a new level of precision. Moopen further emphasized how the development of such innovative instruments helps raise the bar in healthcare by enhancing cancer patients’ quality of life and speed of recovery.

AIIO Global Director Dr. Somashekhar S. P. talked about the advantages of IOeRT for patients with advanced and complicated malignancies. He clarified that individuals whose malignancies might not respond as well to traditional treatments now have hope thanks to this technology. IOeRT improves long-term recovery results and decreases the danger of recurrence by specifically targeting cancer cells that remain, increasing the likelihood that patients will survive.

The implementation of IOeRT is timely because by 2040, cancer cases in India are expected to rise by 57.5%. IOeRT is a vital tool for managing the nation’s rising cancer burden due to its accuracy and capacity to treat cancers such as lung, gastric, and breast cancers.

IOeRT is a game-changer, according to Dr. M S Beliappa, Head of Radiation Oncology at Aster Hospitals in Bangalore, who noted that its precision in radiation administration improves patient outcomes, shortens recovery times, and has few side effects. International specialists applauded the debut of IOeRT in India, recognizing its potential to improve patient care overall and the outcomes of cancer treatment. These experts included Dr. Felipe Calvo from Madrid and Francesco Zanetti, President & CEO of SIT.
