ICMR Initiative: Advancing Lung Cancer Care through Evidence-Based Guidelines

To improve knowledge and treatment of lung cancer in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched a major program. The International Commission on Cancer (ICMR) invites researchers to submit expressions of interest in order to carry out systematic reviews and meta-analyses and produce evidence that will guide decisions about lung cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and palliation.

India faces a serious health crisis due to the high frequency of lung cancer, which is also the primary cause of a large number of fatalities from cancer. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are essential tools for synthesizing study findings because they offer a thorough assessment of the body of available data. These studies play a crucial role in directing clinical practice, enhancing patient outcomes, and influencing policy decisions about the treatment of lung cancer.

Under the ICMR effort, systematic review teams will be tasked with conducting a thorough literature analysis of the literature pertaining to certain review questions that the Guideline Development Group of lung cancer guidelines has identified. These inquiries cover a broad spectrum of subjects, including preventative measures like the link between lung cancer, air pollution, and tobacco use.

The Department of Health and Family Welfare, the Directorate General of Health Services, and the Department of Health Research are among the important stakeholders involved in this collaborative initiative, which underscores the government’s dedication to creating evidence-based guidelines that are specific to the healthcare system in India.

In order to provide evidence for these principles, a comprehensive analysis of the current literature with an emphasis on well specified review questions is required. This guarantees that the most recent research findings are incorporated into the guidelines, enhancing their correctness, significance, and practicality in clinical settings.
