Himachal Pradesh Government Restores Full Salaries for Doctors Pursuing Postgraduate Studies

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made a big announcement ahead of Diwali regarding a considerable incentive for medical professionals enrolled in postgraduate (PG) programs in the state. The state government has chosen to exempt doctors enrolled in postgraduate studies, Senior Residency (SRship), or doctoral-level courses from the prior policy of lower pay during study leave in response to medical officers’ complaints. Doctors on study leave were severely underpaid under the previous Cabinet decision, receiving only 40% of their income. This created a financial strain and deterred many from continuing their education.

Under the new regulation, postgraduate medical students will henceforth be paid in full when enrolled in classes, and their coursework will be regarded as on-duty time. Chief Minister Sukhu stressed the significance of this ruling, saying it acknowledges the doctors’ dual roles in juggling patient care and academic obligations. He emphasized that maintaining their financial security is essential to their career advancement as well as the general health care system in Himachal Pradesh. The government wants to improve the quality of training, which should result in better patient outcomes and a more robust healthcare system in the state, by guaranteeing that physicians continue to receive their full wages.

Following a discussion with a group of medical officers who raised concerns with the Chief Minister, this decision was made. After this discussion, Sukhu took prompt action, giving health department representatives instructions to resolve the matter, which led to the granting of full pay for aspiring physicians.

This decision has received considerable approval from the Himachal Medical Officers’ Association, whose president, Dr. Rajesh, said it addressed a significant issue among physicians. Medical professionals’ morale has much improved as a result of the Chief Minister’s prompt and compassionate response to the depressing policy of only paying 40% of earnings. Dr. Rajesh thanked Sukhu for identifying and fixing this problem.

The Chief Minister’s plan is in line with his goal of empowering physicians in Himachal Pradesh through high-quality education. Since these qualified individuals will work at government health facilities after completing their education, it is expected that this choice will improve infrastructure overall as well as healthcare services. In order to provide strong healthcare services throughout the state and eventually help the residents of Himachal Pradesh, this dedication to promoting medical education is viewed as an essential first step.
