Himachal CM Launches Home-Based Palliative Care Service for Terminally Ill Patients

Chief Minister (CM) Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently launched a home-based palliative care service for cancer patients and terminally ill individuals who are unable to visit hospitals. This initiative, launched on Wednesday, aims to provide compassionate care to such patients in their homes, ensuring that they receive the medical support they need without the stress of traveling to healthcare facilities. The launch took place at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla.

The home-based palliative care service is being run under the Pain and Palliative Cell, which has been established as part of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at IGMC Shimla. The team assigned to this program includes a doctor trained in palliative care, a sociologist, and a nurse, who will work together to offer holistic care. This compassionate care team is designed to address the emotional, social, and medical needs of terminally ill patients, aiming to improve their quality of life during their final stages.

The initiative is a collaborative effort with the Cipla Foundation and Can Support India, two organizations with experience in palliative care. The service is initially available to patients living within a 40-km radius of IGMC Shimla, ensuring that those in the surrounding area can benefit from this specialized care.

CM Sukhu emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to all, particularly to those with serious and life-limiting conditions. The team will work closely with physicians at IGMC Shimla, ensuring that the medical needs of patients are met with the highest standards of care. One of the key features of this service is that patients will be provided with free medicines and dressing kits as part of the program, removing the financial barrier for families already facing the emotional and physical challenges of terminal illness.

The CM also highlighted the significance of this service, noting that it represents a major step in providing specialized care for terminally ill patients, allowing them to receive necessary medical treatment and emotional support in the comfort and privacy of their homes. The goal of this initiative is to improve the quality of life for these patients, offering them dignity and care during their final stages. This program is expected to help ease the burden on families and ensure that patients receive the best possible care in their final days.
