Government Integrates Ayush into National Health Mission to Enhance Accessible and Quality Healthcare

As a key tactic to deliver easily accessible, reasonably priced, and high-quality healthcare, Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav emphasized the government’s attempts to incorporate Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) within the National Health Mission (NHM). Ayush practitioners and paramedics are supported under the NHM, Jadhav said in a written response to the Rajya Sabha, as long as they are co-located with already-existing district hospitals, community health centers (CHCs), and primary health centers (PHCs), with an emphasis on remote areas.

13,222 Ayush facilities have been co-located under the NHM as part of this strategy. There are 2,916 health facilities above the sub-center but below the block level, 190 health facilities at or above the block level but below the district level, 6,612 PHCs, 3,035 CHCs, 469 district hospitals, and other health facilities included in this. Furthermore, as of December 31, these co-located medical institutions employed 27,421 Ayush doctors and 4,581 paramedics.

Jadhav pointed out that the government assists states in converting PHCs and sub-health centers into health and wellness centers through the Ayushman Bharat initiative. In order to achieve universal health coverage, these centers seek to provide complete primary healthcare, including community-based health promotion and preventive care, using a continuum-of-care strategy.

Additionally, Ayush medicine has been added to the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) medication kit for community-based primary condition management. This integration helps ASHA employees treat common health conditions with traditional medicines and provide basic healthcare services.

The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research, situated in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, is an important hub for the revival and advancement of traditional medicine and therapeutic methods. The institute’s main goals are to record folk claims and provide scientific evidence for ethnomedical practices. Furthermore, it focuses on enhancing the abilities of traditional healers and organizes awareness camps to showcase the potential of folk medicine and therapeutic techniques.

The Quality Council of India launched a voluntary certification program for traditional community healthcare providers in order to guarantee their caliber and legitimacy. The purpose of this certification is to improve the community’s perception of traditional healers’ dependability and trustworthiness while standardizing traditional healthcare procedures.

The central government’s attempts to incorporate Ayush into the National Health Mission are part of a larger strategy to bring traditional medicine and contemporary healthcare systems together. The government intends to improve the availability, affordability, and caliber of healthcare services throughout the nation by encouraging traditional healing methods, combining Ayush medications into ASHA kits, and co-locating Ayush facilities with already-existing healthcare facilities. The overarching objectives of the Ayushman Bharat program, which aim to provide improved health outcomes and universal health coverage for all citizens, are also supported by these activities.
