Following the mysterious death of Dr. Kartikeya Srivastava, a 28-year-old Master of Surgery (MS) student at Motilal Nehru Medical College, three doctors from Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital have been the subject of a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the police in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the sister of the deceased, Dr. Aditi Srivastava, filed a formal complaint. The complaint contains grave accusations against Drs. Shivam Gupta, Sachin Yadav, and Anamika.
On Saturday night, Dr. Kartikeya was discovered dead in his automobile at SRN Hospital. According to preliminary findings, he might have injected himself with a poison to end his life. To ascertain the precise cause of death, the police are awaiting the postmortem report. Because of the gravity of the accusations made by his sister—that her brother was abused by his senior in both physical and mental ways—the case has garnered a lot of attention.
Dr. Shivam Gupta, a second-year senior student, allegedly harassed Kartikeya physically and psychologically on a regular basis, according to Dr. Aditi’s complaint. She said that although Kartikeya had previously voiced concerns to Associate Professor Dr. Sachin Yadav regarding this mistreatment, nothing was done to resolve the issue. The complaint also describes an event in which Dr. Yadav reportedly forced Kartikeya to stand for 36 to 48 hours in spite of his leg problems, worsening his condition.
The personal relationships between Kartikeya and Dr. Anamika, an ophthalmology junior resident, further complicated the matter. The complaint states that Anamika abruptly stopped talking to Kartikeya and told him she was seeing someone else. After then, Anamika supposedly called Kartikeya on occasion, even though he never made the first move to get in touch with her. Dr. Aditi voiced doubts about Anamika’s new friend’s potential involvement in her brother’s demise, pointing to a more intricate web of interpersonal and professional issues that may have contributed to the catastrophe.
Abhishek Bharti, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, has verified that a comprehensive inquiry is underway. He underlined the gravity of the situation, noting that it raises questions about mental health, abuse in medical education, and the duties of senior medical staff members toward their juniors. The circumstances surrounding Dr. Kartikeya’s passing highlight the need for a more thorough investigation of the stressors that medical students encounter as well as the institutional cultures that can have fatal consequences.
