During an international meeting of top doctors and medicos, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh received the coveted “Lifetime Achievement Award.” He was recognized widely in India and elsewhere for his important contributions to the fields of diabetology, diabetes care, and research, for which he was awarded this accolade.
The citation was read aloud by Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre in Chennai. It emphasized the breadth of Dr. Singh’s work as a diabetology practitioner, researcher, and lecturer. Dr. Singh has distinguished himself for his state, his nation, and himself from modest beginnings. Dr. Singh’s commendation compared him to the renowned Dr. B. C. Roy, highlighting his unique combination of medical proficiency and a prosperous public career. Recognized for his impeccable reputation and honesty, Dr. Singh has been elected to the Lok Sabha three times and is the first person from Jammu & Kashmir to hold three consecutive terms in the Union Council of Ministers.
The citation also mentioned Dr. Singh’s exceptional distinction as the longest-serving Lifetime Patron of the largest academic society of diabetologists, the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI). It lauded his adaptability as a scholar, investigator, physician educator, writer, and speaker. Among his many honors are the “Jamna Devi Gian Devi Award” for journalism and the “Gold Medal for Oration” from JIPMER, Puducherry. He has written eight books, three monographs, and several chapters for prestigious medical textbooks about diabetes. Notably, the World Book Fair in New Delhi included his book “Diabetes Made Easy” in its Best-seller area.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognized Dr. Singh for his groundbreaking research on “Stress Diabetes in Kashmiri Migrants.” Additionally, he was a member of the DIPSY Group that created the “Guidelines for Management of Diabetes in Pregnancy,” which were ultimately endorsed by the WHO. He has assisted about two dozen scholars with their thesis work in his capacity as a medical teacher.
The citation also highlighted Dr. Singh’s accomplishments as a Minister and Parliamentarian, emphasizing his powerful speeches and interventions in Parliament as well as his skillful administration of numerous Ministries and Departments.
