Doctors Demand Dissolution of West Bengal Medical Council Over Corruption and Legal Irregularities

In a formal letter to the state government, headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors expressed grave concerns about the functioning of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) and demanded its dissolution. The doctors’ body has made numerous accusations against the current WBMC registrar, Manas Chakraborty, including corruption, violations in the law, and unapproved tenure.

Concerning aspects concerning the operation of the WBMC are revealed in the letter, which is sent to the state’s Health Department. To start, Chakraborty has been acting as the registrar without a legitimate government mandate. The Joint Platform of Doctors emphasized that Chakraborty acknowledged that he had been holding the role unofficially for a number of years. Significant legal concerns about the validity of the Council’s functions are brought up by this unapproved term, especially in light of the registration of doctors.

The potential legal repercussions surrounding the registration certificates that Chakraborty signed are a crucial problem that the letter outlines. All of the registration certificates he signed while serving as registrar can be questioned if his status as registrar is found to be void. Because of the incorrect oversight by the Council, medical practitioners are at serious risk to their jobs and qualifications.

The doctors’ group has stressed that the government must act quickly to disband the WBMC and establish a new, legitimate organization in its place. They have voiced worries that the legitimacy of the current Council is under threat and that, if it is not handled right now, its activities may result in more legal issues. The letter cautions that maintaining the current setup could have an impact on West Bengal’s larger health system in addition to the WBMC’s reputation.

The state’s medical community is becoming more and more irate as they want responsibility, transparency, and sound governance from their regulating organization, which is reflected in the request for dissolution. The Joint Platform of Doctors is calling for measures to address the alleged misbehavior and guarantee the legal and operational validity of the state’s medical council.

In summary, the accusations made against the West Bengal Medical Council carry significant ramifications for the state’s medical profession’s integrity as well as the public’s confidence in the supervision of healthcare. The body of doctors is looking for swift, decisive action to address these problems and rebuild trust in the WBMC.
