Delhi Medical Council Calls for NMC Approval for FMG Internships in Non-Teaching Hospitals

Regarding the approval of internships in non-teaching hospitals or institutes for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has brought up a significant matter with the National Medical Commission (NMC). Dr. Ashwini Dalmiya, the President-elect of the Delhi Medical Association and Executive Member of the DMC, published this development on X, formerly known as Twitter, on April 15. It highlights an important part of medical education and training in India.

The DMC said in their letter on April 10 that after the results of the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) were announced in February 2024, there was a considerable demand for internships, especially from students in Delhi. The urgent need for internship opportunities was highlighted by the council, with 230 individuals from Delhi alone expressing their interest in interning there out of a total of over 1,000 candidates.

There are only 60 spots available for internship training allotment in various medical colleges/institutions in Delhi, which makes the current scenario difficult. The disparity between the number of applications and the number of seats available prompts questions about whether all worthy applicants, particularly those from Delhi, can be accommodated.

The DMC has asked the NMC to take internships at non-teaching hospitals or institutions into consideration for validation in response to this issue. This suggestion is a result of the council observing that NMC took similar steps the previous year to make sure that seat restrictions did not jeopardize the interests of the students.

This desire is significant because it could have an effect on how FMGs in Delhi and throughout India are educated and trained in medicine in the future. We may learn more about the difficulties faced by FMGs, the value of internship programs, and the part regulatory organizations like the DMC and NMC play in successfully resolving these difficulties by delving deeply into this subject.
