Delhi L-G Approves Long-Awaited Promotions for 295 Chief Medical Officers in Government Hospitals

Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena of Delhi authorized the long-awaited elevation of 295 Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) employed by Delhi government hospitals on November 20, 2024. This ruling was viewed as a major step towards resolving long-standing concerns about the advancement of careers and working conditions for public servants in the healthcare industry. The promotions were carried out in accordance with the Delhi Health Service (Allopathy) Rules, 2009, and they are intended to improve the working conditions for physicians in the public health system, according to Raj Niwas authorities.

Following a thorough review procedure, the promotion of these 295 CMOs—who were among 302 eligible candidates—was authorized. Of the 302, 295 were determined to be eligible, six were judged ineligible for promotion for a variety of reasons, and one case has been placed on hold because of an ongoing vigilance investigation. Saxena’s office is taking this action as part of a larger initiative to guarantee that government workers, especially those in the healthcare industry, are given timely promotions and opportunities for professional advancement. By resolving long-standing issues and enhancing working conditions for public health system employees, the goal is to increase Delhi’s healthcare infrastructure’s overall efficacy.

However, because of grave claims of sexual harassment, one Medical Superintendent (MS) at the Maharishi Valmiki Hospital has not been promoted. This MS’s promotion was halted until the investigation was finished since a female MD had filed a complaint against him. The administration’s dedication to making sure that career gains and promotions are founded on upholding a secure and moral workplace in addition to talent is demonstrated by this action.

Saxena’s ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency of Delhi’s healthcare system and offer a disciplined and equitable professional development path were the rationale behind the decision to approve these promotions. The L-G’s office stressed that this move was in line with his overarching objective of fixing long-standing problems that Delhi government employees were facing. The administration aims to create a work environment that supports professional development and makes sure that staff members feel appreciated for their contributions to the public service by making sure that promotions are handled fairly and effectively.
