The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Kolkata is still looking into the horrific August 9, 2023, rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Nirmal Ghosh, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, was interrogated by CBI agents for about seven hours on September 23 in relation to the case. Representing the Panihati constituency, which includes the victim’s home, Ghosh is said to have had a significant involvement in the pre-incident events, including the hurried funeral ceremonies for the deceased.
Ghosh was questioned by the CBI mostly on his presence at the hospital and the crematorium, two important sites on the day of the tragedy. Call logs involving Ghosh and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital and one of the primary suspects who has already been taken into custody, are also being examined by investigators. The CBI is investigating the content of these exchanges to find out if Ghosh was aware of the crime beforehand, was involved in it, or was trying to hide it.
After being questioned, Nirmal Ghosh spoke to the media and stated that he wanted the victim to receive justice and that the perpetrators should face the harshest punishment possible. He denied any misconduct on his part and said that his only intentions were to support her family and pursue justice, characterizing the deceased as a gifted doctor from his district.
Three people have been arrested as a result of the investigation thus far, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal. Financial anomalies at the hospital that may be connected to the suspects are also being investigated by the authorities. In connection with a another matter involving financial malfeasance at the hospital, a local court on September 23 prolonged the jail custody for Sandip Ghosh and three other individuals until October 7.
Given the case’s prominence and the public’s desire for justice, the CBI is facing mounting pressure to provide a solution. The investigation is still underway, and it is anticipated that further information regarding the crime will be discovered through interrogation and forensic analysis. The case has rattled the medical and political sectors in Kolkata, as the death of a young doctor under such tragic circumstances continues to dominate headlines and stoke public fury.
