CBI Alleges Cover-Up in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case Amidst Protests and Administrative Shake-Up

In the case of a postgraduate trainee doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College who was raped and killed, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has hinted at a possible cover-up. In a status report that was filed with the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta expressed reservations with the way the issue was being handled locally. Mehta said that the crime scene had been changed, making it difficult to conduct an investigation, and that the victim’s cremation occurred late at night before the First Information Report (FIR) was filed. Suspicion of a cover-up was sparked by this delay as well as the early misrepresentations about the victim’s condition.

According to the CBI investigation, the victim’s parents were initially told by the hospital’s deputy superintendent that their daughter was unwell and subsequently that she had taken her own life. The victim’s coworkers may have suspected foul play and wanted to capture the evidence before it was tampered with, as evidenced by their insistence on having the situation videotaped.

Senior attorney Kapil Sibal responded on behalf of the Kolkata Police, saying that the crime scene was not corrupted and that the correct procedures were followed. He stressed that all required paperwork and filming had been done according to procedure.

In the middle of these changes, Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, voiced serious concerns about the growing number of rapes occurring in India and pushed for tougher legislation and quicker legal proceedings. She emphasized that there are more than 90 reported rapes per day and demanded comprehensive national laws as well as accelerated trial times to guarantee justice. This view was also expressed by her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, who emphasized the need for quick convictions and legislative changes.

At RG Kar Medical College, many administrative adjustments have been done in the wake of the disaster. Dr. Manas Kumar Bandhyopadhyay took over as the Principal when Dr. Suhrita Pal was removed. Furthermore, the Health Department dismissed Dr. Arunava Dutta Choudhuri from her role as Head of the Chest Medicine Department and Dr. Bulbul Mukhopadhyay from her post as Superintendent.

There have been numerous protests in which students and junior physicians have called for responsibility and action. They bemoaned Dr. Pal’s absence from the college and questioned the judgment of Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal who had been suspended and subsequently fired from another role.

In an effort to ascertain the truth and provide the victim with justice, the CBI is spearheading the probe into the case after the Supreme Court took suo moto action.
