BRS MLAs Detained During Fact-Finding Mission on Maternal and Infant Mortality at Gandhi Hospital

As members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were being held while trying to look into the purported increase in mother and newborn death rates, tensions at Hyderabad’s Gandhi Hospital grew. The police obstructed the fact-finding team, which was made up of BRS MLAs, from entering the government-run hospital on Monday. As a result, some well-known leaders were detained and placed under preventive custody.

It was impossible for the fact-finding team, which included Kalvakuntla Sanjay, the current MLA, and Methuku Anand, the former MLA, to enter the hospital. Before he could get to the hospital, former health minister T. Rajaiah was taken into custody while leaving the Old MLA Quarters to assist with the investigation. MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, another significant person, was put under house arrest in Jubilee Hills. Maganti Gopinath, the MLA and city president of BRS Hyderabad, was also being held at the hospital. The leaders who were detained were then taken to the Narayanaguda Police Station.

This committee was established by the BRS to investigate identified shortcomings in medical services, with a special emphasis on maternal and infant fatalities throughout Telangana. The party claimed that the Congress-led government was negligent and sought to draw attention to these health issues.

The leaders of BRS have expressed disapproval of the government’s activities, saying that attempts to obstruct their inquiry show a fear of possible disclosures. They contend that there should be no reason to stop the fact-finding expedition from moving forward if the Congress government has nothing to conceal. According to the BRS, the current government’s inadequate administration of healthcare services is a contributing factor in the high rates of maternal and newborn mortality.

The working president of BRS, K.T. Rama Rao, openly denounced the arrests and demanded that the MLAs who were being held free without delay. He expressed shock at the fact-finding team’s arrest and questioned the government’s intentions for stifling the probe in his social media message. He maintained that by highlighting systemic flaws and inefficiencies, the inquiry seeks to enhance public health services.

As the BRS continues to criticize the Congress government’s handling of healthcare and related issues, the incident has further heightened political tensions between the BRS and the Congress in Telangana. The BRS’s fact-finding mission has drawn significant attention to the state’s healthcare system and is perceived as a direct threat to the Congress’s governance.
