Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has demanded that Vineet Goyal, the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, be stripped of his renowned police honors in the wake of grave accusations that he mishandled a high-profile rape and murder case. Adhikari, noting Goyal’s “reprehensible” behavior during the probe, asked that the President’s Police Medal and the Police Medal be revoked in a letter to both Home Minister Amit Shah and President Droupadi Murmu.
At Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and killed, which is what sparked the issue. On August 9, 2024, the victim’s body was found in a hospital seminar hall. A civil police volunteer has been detained in relation to the crime, and the serious injuries and evidence pointed to rape. Because of the case’s graphic nature and the apparent improper management of the inquiry, it has garnered a lot of public and media attention.
In his letter, Suvendu Adhikari attacks Vineet Goyal’s handling of the case, claiming that the Commissioner was complicit in the destruction of evidence and did nothing to stop the vandalism that took place at RG Kar Medical College on August 14, 2024, at night. According to Adhikari, Goyal’s actions harmed the inquiry and aided in a larger plot to hide the real motive for the killing. The leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) charged that Goyal was trying to appease state political leaders and deflect criticism from purported moral and financial problems in West Bengal’s health system.
Adhikari’s letter also draws attention to unsettling allegations made by the victim’s relatives. They claim that the police made them an offer of money when they were grieving at home, demonstrating a lack of consideration and decency during a painful period. The family’s story supports the mounting critique of the Kolkata police’s investigation and case management.
The West Bengal government is under tremendous strain as a result of the case’s widespread indignation and scrutiny. The demand to deprive Goyal of his medals is indicative of larger worries over the state’s handling of important investigations and the honesty of its police force. Adhikari’s plea highlights the demands for justice and accountability in the wake of the horrifying incident, underscoring the political and societal sensitivities surrounding the case.
