Apollo Hospitals Bhubaneswar Successfully Completes Two Liver Transplants, Expanding Local Transplant Care

By successfully completing two liver transplants in two weeks, Apollo Hospitals in Bhubaneswar recently reached a noteworthy milestone and was added to the city’s list of hospitals that provide cadaveric liver transplantation. On December 18, 2024, a living donor technique was used for the first transplant, and on January 4, 2025, a cadaveric liver transplant was used for the second. Both transplant recipients are making a full recovery.

Under the direction of Dr. Soumen Roy, a group of highly qualified transplant surgeons performed the liver transplant procedures. Among the recipients were a young person from Delhi, age 34, and a man from Cuttack, age 58. Decompensated chronic liver disease, which the 58-year-old patient from Cuttack had been afflicted with for three years, explained his state. Senior gastroenterologist Dr. Sushant Kumar Sethi had been caring for him. He sought assistance for a liver transplant as his condition deteriorated and he developed liver failure. The living donor procedure was made feasible by the patient’s sister-in-law’s kind donation of a portion of her liver. Ten days following the procedure, the donor was released from the hospital, and the recipient soon followed, completing his recuperation.

A liver transplant from a cadaver was done for the 34-year-old Delhi youth. An organ from a deceased donor was used in this transplant, which was a major step for Apollo Hospitals in developing their capacity to do cadaveric surgeries, which had not been done in the city before.

During the lengthy liver transplant clearance process, Dr. Sethi pointed out that the Cuttack patient had been hospitalized twice for severe liver failure. He was stable enough to have the procedure. He added that patients in Odisha no longer have to go to other places for this life-saving treatment because of the launch of this liver transplant program.

The local population now has easier access to sophisticated liver care because to Apollo Hospitals Bhubaneswar’s establishment of a dedicated center to offer comprehensive care for patients with complicated liver and gastrointestinal disorders. With this accomplishment, Odisha’s medical services have advanced significantly, making liver transplant surgeries more accessible to the people living in the area.
