With plans to start operations by March, Karnataka is preparing to open its first IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) unit at the Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMC-RI) in Hubballi. This project, which is housed on the second level of the MCH building, is being developed with assistance from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government funds. The goal of this IVF facility is to lower the cost of fertility therapy for middle-class and lower-class people who cannot afford the high fees associated with IVF treatment at private facilities.
Declining fertility rates have made IVF procedures more and more popular, which has increased the number of private IVF clinics in major cities. However, many low-income families cannot afford the treatment because these private hospitals frequently charge between Rs 8 and Rs 10 lakh each child. By providing reasonably priced fertility therapy, mainly to individuals who cannot afford the pricey private options, the new IVF unit at KMC-RI aims to close this gap.
Economically deprived people will greatly benefit from the IVF facility, according to Dr. SF Kammar, director of KMC-RI. Additionally, IVF treatments will be free for Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders and discounted for Above Poverty Line (APL) cardholders, making it accessible to a larger demographic. It is anticipated that this strategy will lessen the cost of IVF for families who might not otherwise be able to pay for such procedures.
Nirmithi Kendra is in charge of the civic work associated with the development of the IVF unit, which includes demolishing existing buildings to create room for the new facility. Following the completion of the foundation, compartments will be made and the equipment required to guarantee the unit operates efficiently will be installed. The IVF equipment is also being funded by NGOs, which increases the service’s accessibility and affordability.
The opening of the IVF unit is viewed as a significant step in resolving the increasing infertility issues that many people, especially those in underprivileged areas, experience. KMC-RI’s IVF centre is well-positioned to increase access to fertility treatments for a wider population by offering a more cost-effective alternative, thus increasing the prospects for infertile couples in the area.
In conclusion, the opening of the IVF facility at KMC-RI is a much-needed milestone in Hubballi, guaranteeing that fertility treatments are now accessible to the middle class and the impoverished rather than being a luxury reserved for the wealthy.
