Junior Doctors at Kolkata Hospital Assaulted by Drunk Patient and Relatives, Prompting Arrests and Renewed Security Concerns

According to press sources, early on Sunday morning, an inebriated patient and his relatives allegedly attacked junior physicians at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The confrontation started when Samsuddin Hossain, a patient, was brought to the emergency room after he hit an aquarium at home during a family argument and had major bleeding from his right hand. Due to allegations of treatment delays, Hossain and his family are said to have attacked several junior doctors, including female personnel, while intoxicated.

Shaswata Saha, a senior resident physician at the emergency room, filed the complaint. When Hossain’s family members attended the emergency room against the physicians’ advice, the situation worsened. Fortunately, the situation was quickly brought under control by hospital security staff, the relatives of other patients, and the on-duty police officers.

Two people were promptly taken into custody by the police from the site. After the event, Hossain was treated by the medics who were on duty, who even did a minor procedure to suture up his injuries. Following the physicians’ official complaint, Hossain and his brother were taken into custody. After that, they appeared in court in Sealdah and were detained by the police until October 5.

The incident brings to light persistent worries about the security and safety of hospital staff members. Junior physicians in Kolkata have had to cope with several attacks, which frequently result from patient relatives’ annoyance and strain during stressful circumstances. Similar attacks against physicians have occurred before, including at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati, which prompted medical professionals to begin an indefinite strike in response to calls for increased security. These incidents are similar to the one that occurred at Calcutta National Medical College.

The increasing number of these cases, in spite of promises from authorities, highlights the susceptibility of medical staff in public institutions. It highlights the pressing requirement for strong security measures in order to guarantee that medical professionals can function in a secure setting. Concerns are also raised concerning the psychological and physical toll that the situation is taking on physicians, who treat patients in spite of threats and coercion. In order to maintain medical workers’ well-being and offer a safe working environment, the healthcare sector needs to address these challenges.
