Recently, a 16-year-old girl had a big hairball removed from her stomach after a successful surgery done by doctors at Pacific Medical College and Hospital in Bheelon Ka Bedla, Udaipur. The patient had trichophagia, a psychological disease characterized by excessive hair intake, which led to an uncommon condition known as trichobezoar. This disorder, which is more common in teenagers, frequently results in the development of hairballs in the stomach.
The girl’s family complained of vomiting and stomach ache, so they took her to the hospital. Dr. S.G. Mehta of the Psychiatry Department examined her initially and performed several tests, including an endoscopy. Her tummy had a big hair mass, which the tests found. After that, the patient was admitted to the surgical unit, where Professor Dr. Renu Rova was in charge.
A CT scan and further tests revealed the existence of a large hairball, roughly the size of a cricket ball. Surgery was the only effective treatment option because of its size and the fact that it had totally obstructed the small intestine’s opening to the stomach. A laparotomy, or open surgery, was required because the hairball was too big and sticky to be removed by endoscopic means.
Under the direction of Professor Dr. Renu Rova, a group of committed medical professionals led by Drs. Uday Tambe, Ashu Tiwari, Ravi Ranjan, Ankit, Akashdeep, Shubham, Sumit, and Gulnaz worked together to successfully complete the procedure. Drs. Prakash Audichya, Sameer Goyal, Nikuj, and Shehnaz Sheikh made up the anesthesiology team. Normal gastrointestinal function might be restored since the hairball could be carefully removed by the surgeons during the procedure.
According to Dr. Rova, if left untreated, trichobezoar—a rare and potentially hazardous illness frequently associated with trichophagia—can result in a number of problems, such as anemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, and malnourishment. It takes early detection and intervention to stop these dangerous health problems.
The patient recovered fully following the procedure and was allowed to leave the hospital. Because of the management of Pacific Medical College’s cooperation, the complete therapy was given at no cost. The patient’s family sincerely thanked the medical personnel, nursing staff, executive director Aman Agarwal, chairman Rahul Agarwal, and the medical team for saving their daughter’s life.
