At Government Medical College’s Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, a junior resident physician has allegedly been the victim of sexual harassment by an anonymous person. Police officials reported the incident on Wednesday.
This story has come to light soon after the horrific rape and killing of a doctor in Kolkata last month, which caused national indignation. Concerns regarding the safety of women in general and medical professionals in particular are growing in light of the recent occurrence.
As per the allegation made by the female doctor, the harassment transpired on Monday night at approximately 10:00 PM. After finishing her shift at work, she was riding her scooter back to her hostel. The girl, who is from Delhi originally, claimed that she was approached by a man on a motorcycle on the medical college grounds, close to her dorm. The attacker allegedly grabbed her handbag and made inappropriate physical contact with her. When the victim set up an alarm, the situation became more intense and the accused had to leave the area.
Based on the doctor’s statement, the police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) for sexual harassment under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Maninderpal Singh, North Zone. The ACP added that two guys on bikes were involved in the event, and that the goal of the current inquiry is to identify and capture the accused.
In response to the report, the police looked through local CCTV footage to follow the suspects’ movements. The accused tried to grab the doctor’s pocketbook, according to the video. The goal of the ongoing inquiry is to find the offender and make sure the victim receives justice.
The event has brought attention to how urgently medical facilities need to strengthen their security protocols, particularly for women who work late shifts. It also highlights the larger concern of women’s safety in a variety of professional contexts, indicating the increasing demand for more stringent policies to shield people from abuse and harassment.
