Almost three weeks after a horrifying occurrence involving the rape and murder of a doctor at the hospital, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, was arrested. This development has garnered media attention. The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) arrest of Ghosh on suspicion of financial irregularities is related to the continuing investigation into this unfortunate event.
After the doctor was discovered murdered and raped inside an RG Kar Medical College and Hospital seminar hall, the hospital’s management came under close scrutiny. The Calcutta High Court expressed concern that Sandip Ghosh, the principal from February 2021 to September 2023, ought to have been the first person questioned in relation to the murder. This suggestion put him under investigation. In October 2023, Ghosh received an unexpected transfer from his job; however, he was back on the job after a month, and he continued to work there till the doctor passed away.
The charges of financial impropriety against Ghosh prompted the CBI to take action. Former Ghosh coworker Dr. Akhtar Ali has filed a complaint, accusing Ghosh of corruption and irregularities during his employment. According to Dr. Ali, Ghosh was involved in the trafficking of biological waste, the unlawful selling of unclaimed bodies, and the manipulation of tenders in order to receive commissions from manufacturers and suppliers of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. Furthermore, Ali claimed that Ghosh had demanded ₹5 lakh to ₹8 lakh from pupils in order for them to pass their tests.
Three private companies with headquarters in Kolkata are also named in the FIR, which was submitted at the request of the Calcutta High Court: Ma Tara Traders, Eshan Cafe, and Khama Louha. Criminal conspiracy, deception, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act are among the accusations brought against Ghosh and these organizations.
Although Ghosh had been subjected to daily interrogations by the CBI for fifteen days, his arrest is now predicated on his alleged involvement in the financial irregularities. In addition, the investigation has brought to light further arrests in connection with the rape and murder case. Sanjay Roy, the main suspect, was seen entering the lecture hall at 4:03 in the morning when the victim was asleep. The autopsy revealed that the victim had been beaten, strangled, and sexually assaulted.
The CBI’s investigation into Ghosh’s financial misbehavior and the larger probe into the doctor’s murder highlight grave worries about corruption and poor management in the hospital’s management. The case is still pending and might have a big impact on Kolkata’s larger healthcare system as well as the institutional integrity of RG Kar Medical College.
