Resham Devi, 97, is the oldest known patient in India to have undergone a total knee replacement operation, which is a great medical accomplishment accomplished by Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Her severe osteoarthritis made the surgery necessary and severely limited her range of motion.
Resham Devi has spent the last thirty years living on her own in Vrindavan. But following a mishap last year that left her with a fractured and dislocated left hip, her mobility issues worsened. Because of her frailty, her ailment was treated conservatively at first, but over time, a flexion deformity in her hip and progressive osteoarthritis in both of her knees worsened her mobility problems.
Devi pushed for a double knee replacement to enhance her quality of life despite the dangers related to her age and health. She was desperate to reclaim her independence. She arrived at Fortis Hospital with extreme pain and restricted mobility in her left hip and both knees. Doctors first advised replacing one knee and then doing a second knee replacement operation three months later. Devi, though, insisted on having both knees done at the same time.
The medical staff performed a comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluation that included cardiac assessments, liver and kidney function testing, and bloodwork tests. They performed the dual procedure after making sure she was fit for it. Her left knee was replaced initially, and the surgical team kept a careful eye on her vital signs. Her right knee was successfully replaced, and there were no negative side effects.
Given Devi’s advanced age and other medical issues, Dr. Dhananjay Gupta, Director of Orthopaedic Replacement and Reconstructions at Fortis, emphasized the case’s difficulty. He pointed out that postponing the procedure might have caused her mobility and general quality of life to worsen even further.
The hospital is hopeful that Devi will recover from the surgery and that her experience may inspire others to seek early medical attention for problems that make it difficult for them to go about their everyday lives. In addition to demonstrating developments in orthopedic surgery, this example emphasizes how critical it is to address mobility concerns, especially in the elderly, in order to improve their independence and general well-being. For many others dealing with comparable issues, Resham Devi’s resolve to enhance her health is an encouraging example.
