70-Year-Old Physician Provides Free Medical Care in Isolated Sunderbans for Two Decades

Every weekend, in the heart of the isolated Sunderbans, Dr. Arunoday Mondal, a Padma Shri recipient, illuminates the area with a beacon of hope and healing via his path of compassion and dedication. This seventy-year-old physician has been traveling 160 kilometers to conduct his free clinic, Sujan, for more than 20 years. Kolkata to Hingalganj in the Sundarbans. Thousands of lives have been impacted by his altruistic work, which embodies the spirit of healthcare and humanity in the face of hardship.

In order to prepare for a protracted and difficult travel to assist individuals in need, Dr. Mondal sets out on his trek before the sun rises. It’s a difficult route to get to Hingalganj; it involves taking trains, driving, crossing boats, and riding bikes over tough terrain. Notwithstanding the obstacles presented by inadequate infrastructure and communication, Dr. Mondal’s resolve to offer medical assistance to marginalized areas is unwavering.

The origins of Dr. Mondal’s mission may be found in his early years spent in the Chandrakhali Panchayat area of Hingalganj, where he personally observed the difficulties locals had in obtaining necessary medical care. Tragic effects from a lack of medical services included deaths from avoidable illnesses like snakebite and difficult childbirth. Driven by his grandfather’s charitable healthcare history, Dr. Mondal set out to improve the lives of people who are sometimes overlooked by traditional healthcare systems.

After earning an MBBS degree from Kolkata and working at a children’s hospital, his career path took a radical turn when he made the decision to devote his life to helping the underprivileged populations of the Sundarbans. He used to provide free consultations from his house, but the demand for his services became so great that he had to open Sujan, a complete medical facility that could handle a variety of medical issues.

Sujan, which has a committed staff of medical experts that put in endless effort to deliver vital services, is a monument to Dr. Mondal’s vision and dedication. The center provides diagnostic services that are essential for an appropriate diagnosis and course of therapy, including sonography, CT scans, and pathology testing. A physiotherapy clinic also meets the requirements of people with impairments by providing assistance and rehabilitation programs.

Dr. Mondal’s work has a profound effect that goes far beyond medicine; it is an example of optimism, fortitude, and community empowerment. By bestowing upon him the esteemed Padma Shri award in 2020, Sujan and its team have acknowledged not just his individual accomplishments but also the group spirit of service that unites them.

But according to Dr. Mondal, the real test of success is not recognition but rather the respect, trust, and affection of those he helps. His selflessness and devotion inspire us and serve as a powerful reminder of the positive effects that one person’s kindness and dedication can have on the wellbeing of an entire community.

Dr. Mondal’s narrative illuminates the way toward a healthcare system that is more compassionate and equitable in a world where problems and inequalities are commonplace. His story teaches us important lessons about the transformational potential of selfless service, the strength of empathy, and persistence. As we honor his outstanding accomplishments, we are reminded of the lasting significance of humanitarian principles in creating a society that is more inclusive and well-being.
