63-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Successful Tummy Tuck Surgery for Rare Abdominal Elephantiasis

In order to address abdominal elephantiasis, a rare illness, a 63-year-old woman in New Delhi had a complicated tummy tuck procedure at a private hospital in Faridabad. The growth of excessive layers of loose skin and fat in the abdomen area is the hallmark of this ailment, which she had been dealing with for ten years. She also suffered from an umbilical hernia, which manifests as a visible bulge close to the navel. Her mobility was significantly limited, and the condition caused her a great deal of distress.

Abdominal elephantiasis is a very uncommon condition that affects only 0.005% of people worldwide. In this instance, the patient’s advanced age, obesity, and weak abdominal muscles made the problem worse. A significant amount of skin and fat protruded from the patient’s abdomen, posing health and physical hazards. Following an initial evaluation at Fortis Escorts, Faridabad, the medical team determined that the patient will be treated with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and hernioplasty (hernia repair). The goal of the stomach tuck was to tighten the abdominal muscles and eliminate extra tissue and fat.

The four-hour procedure was carried out by a surgical team under the direction of Dr. Manish Nanda, another director of plastic surgery. One kilograms of extra skin and fat was removed during the surgery. The patient’s weight was drastically decreased, and her quality of life was enhanced. The patient’s advanced age, the severity of her disease, and the risks involved—such as severe blood loss, infections, and consequences like multi-organ failure—made the procedure difficult. The team ensured a successful surgery by taking the required measures, which included sophisticated wound care, precision anesthesia, blood sugar monitoring (because the patient had diabetes), and cardiac evaluations.

After six days, the patient’s condition stabilized and they were released. Without the operation, the patient may have experienced a number of health problems, such as a higher chance of heart problems, early degenerative changes in her spine and joints, and a larger risk of skin infections because of her excess weight. Her health and mobility have significantly improved as a result of this treatment, increasing her chances of leading a healthier and more active life.
